A visit to Bar Harbor is required if you are in that part of Maine! We actually drove in several times. We had our most exciting adventure right here in the most civilized part of our week long trip! After spending some time at the wharf and seeing that the town was full of many visitors from a large cruise ship that was sitting in the harbor, we decided to go out across the famous bar of Bar Harbor and explore Bar Island
across the way from the town. We walked through town and down the road that runs down to the area where the sand bar is. This “rock” bar was pretty wide and there were many people out there and even a couple of cars had driven across to Bar Island. We checked the info on the tides and thought we had plenty of time to go over & get back.
Once on the island, Mary decided to go back to the town to do some exploring there, and the rest of us decided to follow the trail to the summit of the island. This was not a big summit but the path wound around a lot. Once to the top, we enjoyed the view and the guys were talking camera equipment for a few minutes.
Eventually we decided to start back down the path, which is always faster than going up but Andy saw a deer, to our surprise, so we had to stop and get some images!
That deer stood there for a long time! Still think it did that on purpose! Laughing at us the whole time! Because as we discovered once we came out of the woods that cover Bar Island, the tide was coming in quickly! We walked to the edge and quickly came to the decision to try to walk across! We took off our shoes and lifted our cameras over our heads and made our way into the water! The tide was coming in pretty fast and the footing was not the best so I know I was moving as gingerly and quickly as I could. Who knows what we were stepping on! The rocky bottom was taking a toll on my feet! At one point I saw a more sandy area in the water but soon found that was a bit deeper, about 3.5 feet, so I went back to the rocky section. After what seemed forever, I reached a section that was still above the water but that was fast being covered as well. My feet were so bruised that I felt like I could not take another step so I stopped & put my shoes back on. That is when Andy said there is another section ahead that is covered already! I decided to leave my “water-proof” shoes (but not for 3 feet of water) on and slosh around for the rest of the day! Once I reached dry land again I turned around to see who was behind me.
A couple more of our group were still coming! As we regathered & made our way back up to the street in the town we looked back and by then the whole “bar” was covered by water! So much for checking the tides tables!
We found Mary, told her she owed us a stranding on an island and quickly found a place for lunch! I had some yummy lobster tail and that made me feel much better! My feet were sore for days but that was not about to deter my continued adventures in Maine!
